Forest Preserve District of Cook County
The Forest Preserves of Cook County, with nearly 70,000 acres, is one of the oldest and largest forest preserve districts in the United States. With the ecosystem constantly evolving, the district has to regularly update its documentation of its nine regions so visitors can take full advantage of all the Preserve has to offer. While working for a previous employer, we jumped right into this massive undertaking.
Ryan began by assessing previous iterations of Preserve maps to identify what was working, areas for improvement, and capturing expectations for map users in general. Satellite imagery was then utilized to delineate regional boundaries and determine the scale of the maps relative to standard sheet paper sizes. Each region was then color coded and art and iconography was generated for the distinct trail systems and topography.
